CCAMM

The Corrosion Control Assessment and Maintenance Manual (CCAMM) provides NAVSEA process requirements and guidance for survey and inspection of coating systems and ship structures. This technical manual applies to US Navy surface ships and aircraft carriers and is not authorized as a resource for submarines or mine warfare vessels. CCAMM covers multiple topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Survey periodicities
  • Conducting surveys
  • Data collection, processing and reporting (MRCs G1N5 and G1N6)
  • Repair recommendation guidance
  • Surveyor qualification requirements
  • Insertable Stalk Inspection System (ISIS)
  • Tank Corrosion Monitoring Systems (TCMS)

The methodology presented within CCAMM augments the requirements found in Naval Ship’s Technical Manual (NSTM) Chapter 100 and NSTM Chapter 631. NSTM Chapter 100 specifies the requirements for survey, inspection, alteration, maintenance, and repair of all ship structure. NSTM Chapter 631 provides instructions, requirements, and information for prevention of corrosion and deterioration of ships, boats, and small craft in the naval service by means of surface preparation, painting, and application of other preventive measures.

Maintenance Requirement Cards (MRCs)

Planned Maintenance System (PMS) Maintenance Requirement Cards (MRCs) provide step-by-step instructions to accomplish shipboard maintenance by sailors or shore activities.

MRC G1N5 Tank and Void Structural and Coating Condition Survey

The Tank and Void Structural and Coating Condition Survey (MRC G1N5) form is used to document structural and coating conditions of tanks and voids during a Level 1 G1N5 survey. The form’s addendum contains detailed instructions to assist the surveyor in recording their findings. A G1N5 survey must be accomplished in accordance with CCAMM’s requirements and guidelines. MRC G1N6 Structural and Coating Condition Survey

The Structural and Coating Condition Survey (MRC G1N6) form is used to document structural and coating conditions of for all surface ships’ general structure, except for tanks and voids, during a Level 1 G1N6 survey. The form’s addendum section contains detailed instructions to assist the surveyor in recording their findings. Naval Ships’ Technical Manuals (NSTMs)

These manuals provide technical information for supervision, operation, and maintenance of U.S. Navy Ships and Submarines. NSTMs are available ONLY to government employees and government contractors possessing a PKI certificate (CAC Card). Visit the Technical Manuals page for additional information. Below is a list of NSTMs that are referenced in regards to coating and structural assessments.

  • NSTM Chapter 100 is the technical manual for maintenance, inspection, and repair of ship structures.
  • NSTM Chapter 631 provides information, requirements, and instructions for prevention of corrosion and deterioration of in-service ships through surface preparation, painting and application of other preventative measures.
  • NSTM Chapter 633 provides information on the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of cathodic protection systems used on active U.S. Navy ships, submarines, boats, and craft
  • NSTM Chapter 634 contains information on the installation and maintenance of deck coverings, gratings, and caulking compounds used for sealing deck seams.


ASTM Standards

The following standards are required references while evaluating coating conditions.
ASTM D610 “Standard Practice for Evaluating Degree of Rusting on Painted Steel Surfaces.” This standard provides photographic references to assist an inspector in evaluating the degree of rusting on a steel surface.
ASTM D714 “Standard Test Method for Evaluating Degree of Blistering of Paints.” This standard provides photographic references to assist an inspector in evaluating the degree of blistering of a coating.
